Simple Ways To Save Water Through The Drought

Water Saving Tips

California is now in its fourth year of one of the worst droughts on record. With lakes and wells drying up all over the state, it has never been more important to do your part to save water. To ensure that you are conserving as much water as possible, keep these simple drought water saving tips in mind.

  • Swap out your toilets – the best water saving option when it comes to your commode is to choose a WaterSense labeled toilet that uses no more than 1.6 gallons of water each time you flush it. However, this type of water conservation will cost you a pretty penny. There are many other water saving (and money saving) options when it comes to your toilet. Installing a $5 water saving insert into your toilet will help you save around ½ a gallon each time your flush.
  • Be responsible with your laundry – investing in an Energy Star washing machine can help you use up to 40 percent less water, reducing your indoor water usage by up to 16 percent. If you do not want to spend the money on a new washing machine, you can simply make sure that you only do a load of laundry when it is completely full.
  • Shorten your shower – cutting down your shower time from 8 minutes to just 5 minutes can help you save over 8 percent on your indoor water usage. If you replace your shower head with a WaterSense shower head it can help you save another 2 percent of your indoor water usage.
  • Switch up your dish routine – if you are putting your dishes in the dishwasher, do not prewash them in the sink. Consider swapping out your old dishwasher with a newer, Energy Star rated model.
