Simple Tips to Stay Safe This Summer

Summer Safety Tips 101

The official start of summer is still a couple of days away, but it is never too early to start thinking about how you can stay safe this season. The rising temperatures can easily lead to a number of dangerous medical conditions. To ensure that you and your family stay safe during the summer solstice, keep these summer safety tips in mind.

  • Never leave your child unattended in your car, even if you are just running into the store for a minute. The temperature inside your car can reach dangerous levels very fast, which can mean disaster for your child.
  • Before you put your child in their car seat, check the buckle. A buckle that has been sitting in the sun can easily burn a child’s delicate skin. Consider covering car seats with a towel or a blanket when you get out of the car to prevent any burns.
  • Make sure everyone in your family stays hydrated. While water is the best to keep you hydrated, many fruit juices also have tons of water that can help to keep your children hydrated when they are playing outside.
  • Always wear sunscreen that has at least 15 SPF when heading outside. The bright summer sun can cause a painful and dangerous sunburn in just a couple minutes of exposure.
  • Schedule any strenuous activities for the late afternoon or early morning to help avoid the hottest part of the day.
  • While outside, try to limit your amount of sun exposure. Wear a large brimmed hat and sunglasses to better protect you from the sun while outside.
  • If you get too hot, go inside and relax in the air conditioning. Make sure kids take breaks throughout the day and relax inside to stay cool.
