Auto Insurance for TNCs
Transportation Network Companies (TNC) have become much more popular in the last few years. Also known as ridesharing companies, TNCs include companies such as UberX, Lyft, and Sidecar. If you are a driver for a TNC, you may have gaps in your auto insurance coverage that can lead to serious issues. Make sure to look over your insurance policies to ensure that you have the right amount of protection while behind the wheel.
TNCs that are approved by the California Public Utilities Commission are required to carry at least $1 million in liability insurance for their drivers. However, TNCs are not required to carry comprehensive, medical payment coverage, collision, underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage, or any other additional coverage options that are available through auto insurance providers. If you are relying on the insurance that is provided by the TNC, you will not have any protection for bodily injury that you incur, damages to your car, or injury or damage that is caused by an underinsured or uninsured motorist.
While you may believe that investing in your own auto insurance policy will provide coverage for all the gaps that come with TNC policies, typical auto insurance policies have exclusions for livery, which means driving your car for hire. Before you rely on your personal auto insurance coverage to provide protection in case of an accident, make sure to talk with your insurance agent to ensure that you have the right amount of protection.
